Seasonal Decorating on the Upper West Side

The Upper West Side runs on the brownstone stoop. The side streets between Central Park West and Riverside Drive are rows of brownstone and limestone houses with high stoops, deep door surrounds, and the kind of iron railing that garland was invented for. It is one of the most decorable stretches of Manhattan, and the neighborhood leans into the seasons more than almost anywhere in the city.

On a brownstone we run the whole stoop: garland up both railings, a wreath on a tall parlor-floor door, a fall arrangement built with real depth on the steps, and lit trees at the base at Christmas. The stoops sit right on the sidewalk, so the display is read by everyone walking to the park or the market, which is exactly why it is worth doing properly.

The grand prewar co-ops along Central Park West and Riverside are the other side of the neighborhood. There the work is the apartment door, the entry gallery, and the interior, tree, mantel, and console, done to the palette of the room.
